Detox

How do toxins impact your health?

Every day, we are exposed to numerous toxins in our foods and environment, often without us even realizing. Off-gassings from indoor carpets and furniture, harmful chemicals in personal care products, and pesticides sprayed on our foods are just a few of the toxins we are exposed to on a daily basis.

Detoxification is our body's natural mechanisms to rid our body of toxins, involving the liver, GI tract, kidney, skin, and lymphatic system. Although our body is designed to eliminate toxins from our body, the number of toxins we are now exposed to on a daily basis can add up to a greater burden than we can handle. When your body becomes overloaded with toxins, it can trigger a cascade of chronic inflammation in the body. This not only further impairs the liver's ability to handle toxins, but can cause widespread issues, such as hormone imbalances, brain dysfunction, poor gut health, weight loss resistance, heart problems, cancer, and more.

Symptoms of toxic overload:

  • Fatigue

  • Headaches

  • Irritability, anxiety, and depression

  • Brain fog or difficulty concentrating

  • Sleep issues

  • Trouble losing weight

  • Skin conditions, eczema and acne

  • Chronic digestive issues or bloating

How to support your body's detox:

1. Limit your toxic burden

The Environmental Working Group is a great resource for finding nontoxic cleaning and personal care products.

2. Support liver function

Certain nutrients and supplements have been shown to assist with detoxification pathways in the body, including:

  • Glutathione: an important antioxidant involved in liver detoxification

  • N-acetylcsyteine (NAC): scavenges for free radicals and promotes glutathione production

  • Vitamin C: another antioxidant which is particularly important for the metabolism and elimination of heavy metals

  • Milk Thistle: a nutrient particularly important for liver health due to its antioxidant properties

  • Dietary Fiber:

3. Consider methylation issues

At Richeson Wellness, we use diagnostic testing to determine if your body is dealing with toxic burden and identify the major sources contributing to your toxic overload. We also provide genetic testing for MTHFR defects which may hinder detoxification. Using this information, we will guide you through a detox protocol specifically tailored to your needs, including supplementation to support your body detox pathways and solutions to overcome any methylation issues.
