In recent years, Coleus has become a popular aid to weight loss. One study of obese and overweight men demonstrated that forskolin improved lean body mass and bone mass in the test subjects. An 8-week trial on overweight women showed reduction in body weight and fat content along with increased lean body mass. A longer, double-blind, randomized trial in female volunteers observed that even though food intake was the same in test subjects and the placebo group, the test subjects taking Coleus forskohlii experienced weight loss, reduced hunger, and greater fullness. Coleus may also help raise HDL cholesterol (the “good” cholesterol) and improve bone density.
